One of the most watched Bollywood films of all time, Bhaiyyaji Superhit is so popular that it has inspired multiple sequels and rip-offs. However, few people know that the film was based on an old play written by M.F. Hussain. Bhaiyyaji is considered to be one of Hussain's best known works for its unique introspection on gender relations in India during the 20th century. Even though Hussain passed away in 1992, Bhaiyyaji remained his most successful work due to its popularity with both Indian and non-Indian audiences alike, not to mention filmmakers who use it as a template for countless other films during Bollywood's golden age. In the play, a man seeking medical help from a doctor after being robbed stumbles upon a parade of protestors on his way to the doctor's office. The protestors are marching to protest against India's lack of women's rights as he overhears some of their complaints. In true Bollywood film fashion, the man gets lost and is brought into the protest by a beautiful woman who accuses him of being a pervert. It was one of these scenes that inspired Shah Rukh Khan to produce a remake that would feature himself as Bhaiyyaji, which he named Bhaiyyaji Superhit . The film was produced and directed by Shah Rukh Khan, and he also starred as the lead. He reportedly remade the film to draw more audiences to it by featuring himself in the lead role. While he is currently considered an accomplished actor, at the time of Bhaiyyaji Superhit , Khan was not as well known as other Bollywood actors such as Aamir Khan and Salman Khan. The film also featured Anushka Sharma in a supporting role, who would go on to become a big star in Bollywood after starring in Khans My Name Is Khan and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi . The film itself had its problems during the making. Khan had trouble initially, as he was unable to find experienced actors or a lead actress for the role of Bhaiyyaji's wife; some of those whom he had thought would be perfect ended up refusing due to various reasons. Some were young and not ready for such a difficult role, while others were unaware of how difficult it would be to play their roles and consequently declined the offer. Eventually, he found Pooja Bedi, who was just recovering from a cancer operation and could not travel abroad for another film at that time. However, after putting up with Khan's entire production team moping around her house and at her workplace, she finally accepted his offer. The film was called an 'anti-story' by critics who criticized the film's non-linear narrative, with numerous flashbacks and flashforwards. Some consider these storytelling devices to be somewhat of a flaw in the film's plot, while others consider them to enhance the character development of Bhaiyyaji Superhit . The film had the most fighting scenes out of any of Khan's films, since it was made during his early years in Bollywood. The film is considered to be one of the best works produced by Shah Rukh Khan. It received major commercial success upon its release in 2006. After several re-releases over the years, it continues to attract audiences more than a decade after its release date.
